Best Back To School Resources for Special Education

Best Back To School Resources for Special Education

Do you remember the Staples commercial where parents sang, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” while they were shopping with their kids who looked like they were ready to cry?  I am slightly disappointed not to have seen it in several years as it truly marks (for me) the beginning of a new school year.  (So, I found it on YouTube- click here)

Back to school usually is met with considerable excitement by both parents and students.  New clothes, teachers, and friends all will be discovered this year. Not to mention the saturation of learning that will be experienced by parents, teachers and oh yeah… the students.

However, on a serious note, parents with children who have exceptional needs often experience a different set of emotion this time of year … anxiety, sadness, and maybe hopefullness.   Parents in this community sometimes are  full of questions and concerns. Will my child have a teacher who is a good “fit” and can follow his/her individual educational plan (IEP/ 504, etc.)?  Will my child be able to learn in a new environment? Make friends? Be able to negotiate a new school building, bus, or vocational center? Be bullied? Be understood?

It is for these parents and students that I write an updated resource list in the hopes that it will provide an easier transition as all children head back to school.  (Also note, that I have included resources for children who are home educated, as well.)  Twitter names are in parentheses. ♦FEATURED PRODUCT COMPANY FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

CAROLINA PAD
-  I LOVE this company!  Probably because they are philanthropic in addition to having a very smart looking set of materials which include – organizers, notebooks, folders and other necessities for back to school. Their products are PERFECT for children who have difficulty with organizational strategies, such as those with learning disabilities for ADD.  Bright colors help with colors coding and mnemonic learning. The designs are very contemporary.

One of my faves is their IDEAL book which is a sectioned spiral book small enough to fit in to a pocketbook. This is terrific for students who lose their books and need inserts to hold CD-Roms and much more in a compact space.  Also, due to the smaller size it lends itself to being a great resource for students who can’t handle a lot of written text on a standard sized paper and can benefit from large rule spacing on a smaller surface. As for adults, I use this book to organize my own business materials, and travel with one to each guest lecture I give! It fits conveniently in my pocketbook and is so bright that I easily find it on my desk!

Thanks to Carolina Pad, I was able to donate  last year many school supplies to children in need.  I plan to do the same this year.  (@carolinapad)

UPDATE:

Here is a FREE OFFER from KABONGO for your child to play the online literacy game:  GoGoKabongo!

GoGoKABONGO – Improving Reading Skills with Early and Struggling Readers

GoGoKABONGO – Improving Reading Skills with Early and Struggling Readers

WARNING:  I am really enthusiastic about GoGoKABONGO and this blog may make you become really motivated to learn more about  how one great company sets the tone for the world of online educational gaming!  Proceed with caution!

88888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

I find it my job to search out and review companies that develop products and services that promote learning.  I consider it my “responsibility”, especially since I write as an expert for JustAsk on Education.com.  When I see a product/service that targets essential tools to master development and can translate in to classroom success – I jump for joy!  Such is the case with the child’s online game - GoGoKABONGO!

The company KABONGO is STEALTH!  On a single website they actively engage younger elementary aged kids to learn skills that are necessary for reading and writing readiness and more. In fact, their learning skills chart reads like a checklist for classroom teachers when designing lesson plans in order to assure language arts and reading skills are mastered!

Imagine your child enhancing memory, attending,  decoding and motor planning all with online GAMING! I told you they were stealth!  And how do they accomplish such a feat?  With cute characters who are integrated in to games that  start with simple phonics and word recognition and then become more complex with paragraph and story building.  Before you know it your child has learned basic core skills, like word order for writing, without realizing it!  Plus there are built in incentives in to their online gaming structure and feedback for parents. Lots of brain power in this online site!

Now here are some features that set   GoGoKABONGO   apart from other sites.  I love that they have a great parent forum that helps to outline exactly the purpose and the goals of their program.  Also, they feature excellent supplemental downloads and games to continue learning offline.  (I particularly loved the Kiddie Yoga  and printable mazes for sensory and visual integration activities.)

Equally as wonderful was the selections for teachers.   Here they expand their offerings to provide more hands on classroom based activities.  This company has been well “schooled” in educational theory and implementation!

Now these next comments are for special educators who are always searching for psycho-educational recommendations for Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs). At times it is a challenge to find classroom and home strategies that work with struggling readers. GoGoKABONGO is a fun way to get a child to improve visual memory, motor-planning and sequential /simultaneous skill development without risking negative reactions from the students. Planning teams can easily integrate GoGoKABONGO in to an IEP  when language arts or reading goals need to be attained at an elementary level.

Now here comes the warning… adults may want to play, too!

The Genius of Ava Parnass and Friends

The Genius of Ava Parnass and Friends

Our giveaway is complete! Thanks to all who participated.  Winners announced below!

Some people are gifted musicians. Others are amazing storytellers. And a  few can help those who truly are in desperate need.  Wrap together the musician, storyteller and the person with a heart to help others and you have one Ava Parnass.  I first became interested in the person who tweets as @ListenToMePleas  because she often was tweeting  with vigor and offering great advice for her “followers”.  Then I noticed she was engaging many online to have REAL conversations in the social media milieu. This piqued my interest as only a select few really want to have meaningful online banter while most just wish to share their favorite meal of the day or sport score update. So, I decided to research Ms. Parnass which resulted in my learning about her brilliance with her writing of children’s books, her creation of music to help soothe and calm children with angst and her amazing spirit to give to other much  more than she receives.

Then something happened which was not expected. I received a note from Ava herself asking if she could learn more about the new experts group forming, 411 Voices, asking if she could participate. Duh- yeah!  And that my friends is the power of how social media can create business relationships and friendships.  Now, as part of 411 Voices,  Ava Parnass shares her brilliance with the friends of 411 Voices daily as it is her tunes that lead in to our radio shows!

Now let’s talk about the wonderful writing and creativity of Ava Parnass. In particular, I would love to discuss her three books, Listen to Me Please,  Time IN  Not – Time OUT! (with Dr. Ron Taffel and Kat Kiminski)  , My Feelings Are Hungry and  Where Did My Good Mood Go?  All of these are adorable books with amazing verse and illustration that pack an intellectual punch! Not to mention that each comes with a solid story to help children express their feelings. Listen to Me Please is a book that should sit on the shelves of libraries and pediatric counseling offices everywhere.  It acts as a script for parents to use to help their children understand the ups and downs of family life. I really liked how parents were offered messages to use in order to help allay their child’s concerns or calm disruption within the home.  Moreover,  it also has garnered the attention of the folks at Nickelodeon, as it is scheduled to be featured in the Nick Jr. Magazine this coming Fall.

When asked how Ava would describe her collection this is what she wrote, ” Our books and songs are entirely devoted to helping parents have fun while improving their child’s behavior, tantrums and/or overeating for the better. Since children learn how they feel through playing, talking, listening, reading, singing, and dancing; our different products reflect the way kids learn. We want to help parents achieve their goal of raising kind, loving, fun, well-behaved children. Read the books, sing and dance to the songs, and have fun while learning that feelings are hiding underneath behavior and need to be talked about so behavior improves.”

I couldn’t have summarized it any better!

Sign Language Spoken in this Home!

Sign Language Spoken in this Home!

Natasha in a pic used for sign language photo cards for special education

I grew up in an area where there were lots of languages spoken.  So, it is of no surprise that when my hubby and I had kids we decided to raise them in a home with several languages.  And since I worked at the Delaware State School for the Deaf at the time of the birth of our first child , incorporating sign language in to our home was an obvious choice.

At first it was fun to introduce a variety of languages to our little mini-robot, eh daughter, Natasha.  But, the value of having a signing home really came in to play when our son, Seth, was born prematurely and  experienced serious speech delays.  Years later we still use sign language in our home, school and places of work.  Of course for me, merging my work as a psychologist with my love for sign language resulted in development of my company, SIGNING FAMILIES™.

I asked Natasha to film a bit about growing up in a bilingual home as part of  the SIGNING FAMILIES™  Just the Basics and Just the Kids online sign language courses.  Below is the video. (She has additional signing videos we will include as well in the series, too!)   I especially like the part where she discusses sign language in respect to culture.  I also was pleased to see that ABCFamily wrote that very aspect in to their most recent episode of Switched At Birth when one mom discussed with the other the importance of deaf culture in relation to ASL.

NEWS:

SIGNING FAMILIES™ has new products too.  Believe it or not we have HEBREW- ASL – ENGLISH Bookmarks in stock now.  Go here to learn more  (Also available with Spanish-ASL-English)

I am trying out the new font from WORDPRESS..not sure if I like it or not…

One Child Helping Another- a True Act of Friendship

One Child Helping Another- a True Act of Friendship

Jaylen, his sister and me - meeting in Florida, December 2010. These kids are both amazing!

I have known Jaylen Arnold for more than a year. Each time I read his posts, watch his videos or see his tweets I have to remind myself that he is not even a teenager, but a young boy with multiple personal challenges who does not wallow in his own struggles, but chooses to help others. In fact he goes beyond measure to assist peers, such as in the case of his friend,  Carissa Bodner.

In the video below Jaylen eloquently appeals to his audience to help Carissa, who recently was hit by a drunk driver while riding her bike. She has been in critical condition and has received multiple surgeries. Carissa, needs our help. Please watch and then consider contributing to  Jaylen’s campaign to lend a helping hand to his dear friend.

There are several ways to connect with Jaylen.

ONLINE ASL VIDEO COURSES NOW AVAILABLE from SIGNING FAMILIES™ (GIVEAWAY ANNOUNCED, too)

ONLINE ASL VIDEO COURSES NOW AVAILABLE from SIGNING FAMILIES™ (GIVEAWAY ANNOUNCED, too)

I know that there are a lot of ways to learn the basics of American Sign Language and Baby Sign language on the internet and via DVDs. One simply needs to GOOGLE ASL to see the plethora of websites, online dictionaries and materials dedicated to teaching the average hearing person how to communicate within the deaf world. However, not much is available and affordable for people who wish to incorporate sign language in to their homes or workplaces when their lives don’t allow for time or access to classes or they may have a difficult family situtation. This is why SIGNING FAMILIESis putting the finishing touches on our SIGN LANGUAGE LEARN AT HOME OR THE WORKPLACE SERIES OF ONLINE COURSES.

We are starting with SIX introductory VIDEO courses geared to help teach people from 3 to 103! EAch lesson is 20 minutes or less, as we know that you have limited time to learn during your day.  A subscription to the online courses will allow you access for 90 or more days (depending on the modules you pick).  IN addition, SKYPE™ one on one practice and learning sessions,  materials and more are available.

Here they are the links to learn more.  They are mentioned in no certain order.

The first course is the BASICS OF ASL for HOMESCHOOL STUDENTS.  I recognize that more and more students, many with exceptional needs, are being taught at home.  Many are visual learners and may profit from learning sign language, not only as a wonderful form of communication, but also as a means to help with overall development and study skills. This course is designed for this group and comes with a whole host of “add ons” including one on one practice sessions via SKYPE™.  Learn more here: HOMESCHOOL COURSE

The second course is ADAPTIVE SIGN LANGUAGE.  This course is near and dear to my heart.  I often sat in school special education IEP meetings where teams of school specialists would recommend to the parents that they learn sign language to help their child who might have had significant learning delays. Many times the parents could not obtain babysitting or afford the cost of classes within their local communities, so they never did learn.  I wanted to bring sign language training to these homes with an affordable and accessible series of lessons.  Learn more about ADAPTIVE SIGN for children with special needs and for those who live, teach or care for them here: ADAPTIVE SIGN LANGUAGE

JUST FOR KIDS, BY KIDS was created as a fun way for kids to learn from their peers.  Lessons are short, simple and geared for the preschool through elementary school crowd.  Junior teachers, Madelyn and Caroline will help teach kids basic sign language. Learn more here: JUST FOR KIDS

ASL for DENTAL PROFESSIONALS- this class was created by request.  Common signs used in the dental office to help make patients feel more comfortable.  Note: this course is not intended to substitute for the use of interpreting services. LEARN MORE HERE:  ASL FOR DENTAL OFFICES

ASL for HOTELS, RESTAURANTS and FAMILY ATTRACTIONS.  This course was designed to help families with deaf members be able to easily communicate with hearing staff in venues such as hotels, restaurants, convention centers and family vacation attractions (such as Disney World, Legoland and Busch Gardens, to name a few)  Learn more here: ASL FOR HOSPITALITY and RESTAURANTS

ASL ALPHABET and NUMBER
This course was developed to teach the essentials and give practice strategies. Learn more here: ASL ALPHABET and NUMBERS

Rosetta Stone Homeschool English Program Shines as a Language Acquisition Product for Deaf and Autistic Children!

Rosetta Stone Homeschool English Program Shines as a Language Acquisition Product for Deaf and Autistic Children!

As a special educator I often am requested to write blogs or answer questions on websites such as Education.com.  Typically, the questions I receive are from parents who are looking for tangible ways to promote the general development of their child with special needs.  The two most sought after domains for information are communication and social skills. It became apparent that I needed to delve further in to research as to what affordable products and programs were available to parents, especially those who opted to teach their child at home. This is why I connected with Rosetta Stone to preview their Homeschool English edition and I was glad I did!

I decided to go through the Rosetta Stone English – Level One series twice. First time I did not use the sound nor the speech simulation aspects of the kit. I wanted to experience this language program from the perspective of a deaf individual.  Now while I recognize that I could never truly duplicate a deaf person’s experience, it helped me to try. To the credit of Rosetta Stone the program had great visual aspects and clear and concise language acquisition modules.  Without the sound or speech replication, one could learn a lot about English grammatical components as there was a continual flow of text/ captions. Note: research has demonstrated that some deaf children who use ASL as their primary language do experience difficulties with writing as ASL is based on syntactical concepts that are not “English”. (And actually are closer to French.) Thus, this program could prove to be a great tool for a deaf child regarding the development of their reading and writing skills!

Now the program was not absolutely “perfect” from the “deaf perspective” however, in my opinion – nearly so.  Only a few times, did the lack of expressive language skills trip up my “grade”.  Overall, as I have indicated,  I think this would be a great addition to primary level deaf education programs, especially grades 2-5.  It also could help with any child who is undergoing speech therapy, such as those with a cochlear implant.

Now for my take on my second experience delving in to the Rosetta Stone Homeschool English Edition. This second time I worked through the program and decided to keep the sound and speech elements in tact.  I wanted to experience the program as if I was home educated and with learning challenges, such as Autism.  I paid special attention to the social story components and the photography.  I must say that Rosetta Stone has created an exceptional product for special needs populations. The photos were excellent.  The kind that is needed to  grab a student’s interest when attending can be difficult. The design of the content was engaging and beautifully demonstrated how people work through every day social situations by providing models and scenarios that could be used as effective learning strategies for socialization. Two examples included how one could greet a stranger or learn to  interact appropriately within a group setting. It would seem very reasonable that the Rosetta Stone program could assist a child on the Autism spectrum to learn how to integrate key socialization concepts and vocabulary needed to engage with others in their own lives.

There are many aspects of this comprehensive series that made it “hands down” the best on the market, in my humble opinion.  However, I would make some minor additions and adaptations to the supplemental materials (e.g. parent guide, student workbook, etc.) and the program itself for children with learning challenges and sensitivity issues. I would be happy to discuss these with Rosetta Stone, if they wish.

Lastly, I saw on Rosetta Stone’s website that homeschool educators gave the Homeschool English Edition a score of 4.8 out of 5.  I would have to agree! This program has proven to be par excellence for language acquisition across ages and needs.  As for the price, some may balk, but if you look at other quality homeschool and special education materials you will see that Rosetta Stone is right in line with most and well worth the price.

Through a Dogs Eyes

Through a Dogs Eyes

I just arrived home from LA, but knew that I had to write a blog “asap” about one of my hosts, little Cali, a Besenji mix and my “grandpuppy”.  We spent many hours bonding during our walks on the streets of West Hollywood. She truly proved to be the “master” when it came to teaching me about viewing the world through a “dog’s eyes”.

For starters, I learned that motorcycles, buses and skateboards are all scary to a dog that has moved from urban Florida to a bustling LA neighborhood. I guess people, like dogs, can learn to adapt to new surroundings if are willing to try new places, sights and smells.

I also learned through Cali that a person should be appreciated and shown compassion even if they are presumably homeless and smelly.

Then I learned that everyone deserves to be heard, including the teen we met at a local Starbucks named, Carlos. This student wanted to “skip school” because he felt misunderstood but was willing to try it for “one more day”.  ”Dr. Cali” listened intently as Carlos explained his reasons for feeling like he “didn’t belong”.  His story was compelling and of the three of “us” he seemed like the “lost puppy”. By the time my coffee was gone, so was Carlos as he made his way across the street to school.

Lastly, there was how our canine ambassador reacted, or rather didn’t react, to droves of participants for the annual gay pride parade.  Despite the noise and numerous people in various forms of dress or undress she walked around the event with what seemed like a wide smile and wagged her tail at each and every person she encountered. No judging nor political agenda – just joy.

I wish everyone would walk through life viewing the world with wonder, excitement and joy- in essence, through a dog’s  eyes!
