Why the OMG! Insider “Twitterati” helped Lori Loughlin become a TWEETER! (And.. how you can join Twitter, too!)

941104_10201293397639947_544850421_n

This week I had the privilege of joining other social media “influencers” at the OMGInsider studios to help actress Lori Loughlin (FULL HOUSE, 90210) lose her “twitter virginity”.  It was a fun morning and also a good time to formulate my thoughts on explaining Twitter to others. (Watch the episode of Lori sending her first tweet to John Stamos here >> LORI’S FIRST TWEET

So, in my effort to provide an educational spin on the social media phenomenon known as TWEETING.. I will provide the 411 as I know it.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social media platform that in my head is like a giant gathering of people.  Some have common interests and some don’t.  You may not wish to engage in conversation with everyone, but,  it can help shine a spotlight on a person’s agenda, pop culture, business savvy or philanthropic causes.  It also is “social” meaning it can lead to true relationships where you actually meet and not only tweet with people.

Twitter is not for anyone who doesn’t like to share or is not trusting of what they read.  It also is not for people who are finger happy and feel the need to tweet about every thought that crosses their mind space.

How to start on Twitter?

First you must decide if you wish to join Twitter and which name best explains your brand. Perhaps it is your name or your company name. My twitter handle is @LouiseASL  - it is my name Louise and my business endeavor American Sign Language or ASL.  In my biio, I explain about myself and love for ASL.. hopefully people make the connection.

Note.. use some caution with Twitter names. One person thought my Twitter was Louise ASS… oops..

Once you have decided on your name and a succinct bio be sure to upload a photo that is flattering and close up. DO not upload your account with the Twitter EGG. That just means that you are a newbie and not worth being taken serious.

Then what to do?

Use the search feature to find people of like interests or trusted news providers. Perhaps you like to follow authors, celebrities or people well known in the Twittersphere.  And of course, if you are respectful and like to be amused go ahead and follow me here>> @LouiseASL

Rules of  the Twitter Universe

Twitter has a long list of rules that you will need to agree to before you send the first tweet.  But, here are some that one must also follow unless you wish to be a lone wolf on Twitter or part of a nasty thread of “meanie” tweets.

- DO NOT SPAM others.  You spam me and I press UNFOLLOW or BLOCK in a flash

- TWITTER is not where you get to “out” someone or bully.  Anyone who bullies by writing negative tweets, even in 140 characters or less” is despicable in my opinion. We need to play by the rules of kindergarten.. starting with “play fair”.  (Here are the basics of kindergarten rules as outlined by author Robert Fulghum, in case you forgot> RULES)

- Be gracious, humble and thankful. If people retweet your blog articles thank them. If they give you a nice shout out – thank them.  Want to be forgotten on Twitter- don’t engage with others or be thankful.

- Learn to say it in 140 characters and use shortcuts such as TYVM (Thank You Very Much) or GR8 (GREAT)

Who should I follow and who should I not follow

Before you press FOLLOW check out the person.  If they have very few or NO ONE following them then race for the Twitter hills! These people are most likely spammers.. that is of course if they are a big named person with a verified account and only follow a handful.

What are verified accounts?

@OPRAH verified (with a blue check mark after the name) means it is her real account and not someone who is using her name in the hopes to get Twitter love from others.

Can you make money or get “stuff” from Twitter

Well this is a topic for another blog.. but if you wish to read up on how to use social media for marketing and branding then go to these reliable resources and read their numerous articles about social media marketing.

MASHABLE

BRITT MICHAELIAN

MOMMYPerks.com

Does it cost anything?

No Twitter is FREE. But, if you are mean, bully or spam others it could cost you something more valuable – your reputation!

Who are the TOP people with the most followers on TWITTER?

This list is always changing. But, here is a recent tabulation.  It may surprise you!  TOP TWITTER ACCOUNTS

What about this PINTEREST that I hear so much about?

OY.. come back another day to read a blog about Pinterest!

Happy Tweeting!!

TORNADO SAFETY FOR FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Yahoo News Photo, May 20, 2013

Yahoo News Photo, May 20, 2013

Today there have been a series of tragic tornadoes that have ripped through the heartland of America causing severe devastation, including loss of life.  Some of the families impacted who have been impacted have family members with special needs.

In an effort to help families and communities who may have some unique challenges during disasters here is some information:

BEFORE A DISASTER

Be prepared.  Alert your local fire department if you have a family member with special needs of any kind, such as physical, sensory, cognitive or other.  Included would be family members with dementia, Alzheimer’s or medical problems.

Have a family plan for sheltering in place and evacuation.

Be sure to have an emergency kit in your home and car.  To know what should be in your emergency kit go to the RED CROSS Disaster Information page.   Don’t forget to add to your kit personal effects, such as your insurance information, copies of marriage and birth certificates and photos of your family members.

For families with children, especially with special needs, have a quick “grab and go” kit of favorite items and things you know will comfort your child during a time of distress.  Stuffed animals, battery operated video games, and books or drawing pads all are good things to bring along. So, be prepared in advance with this GRAB AND GO KIT.

Let others know your plans if you need to evacuate. Where you intend to go and how you will try to check in.

WHAT TO DO IF DISASTER STRIKES

Many agencies including FEMA and the RED CROSS offer much information, including for for families with special populations.

What is in your lunchbox?

What is in your lunchbox today?  I have started to take a real look at the food I have been eating and serving.  I can’t eat the same foods I did when I was a much younger “me”.  So, I am focusing on “real foods”.  Ones that are as close to the original source as possible. That includes discovering new veggies (Brussell sprouts with balsamic vinegar grilled are yummy- who knew?) and fruits (I am loving apricots these days!)  Plus adding at my doctors insistence dairy products .. including milk and yogurt. ( I never was much of a milk drinker, but I am learning to use it in smoothies and coffee.)  And, although I prefer non-meat options I have been eating protein with meat and fish to help me be healthy and curb hunger!

Many families who follow SIGNING FAMILIES   have asked me to post words in American Sign Language which are food related.  So, here you go.. foods that help keep us healthy!

THESE BOLDED WORDS ARE DEPICTED IN OUR SLIDESHOW

EAT and FOOD

VEGETABLE : POTATO

FRUIT :  APPLE, PEAR, PEACH, BANANA

DAIRY: CHEESE, MILK, YOGURT

NOTE: Due to unforseen circumstance the ASL Summer online camp has been cancelled. Look for an upcoming announcement for another option for learning ASL during the summer!

If I could do it all again… I would _____________?

692634124_img_3531-2Over the past few weeks I have had several discussions with family, friends and acquaintances about the topic of “do overs”.  Basically, If you could do it  all again would you have _____?

Some who I engaged in discussion were in the midst of “mid- life”.  Their answers often demonstrated the fatigue one gets as being part of the “sandwich generation”.  I also asked some seniors who gave a different spin to the query and were indeed very introspective.

A few people gave answers that were guarded and only about their professional lives.

For others, the responses were hugely personal and with much elaboration.

Some were surprising (“Would have thought twice about having children”), while many were expected (“Wish I had saved more money for retirement”).

For me I wished I had perhaps chosen a different career path (interpreting) vs. working in education as a psychologist. Yet, I really have no regrets and am perfectly happy with my choice. For if I not gone the road I chose then I maybe would not have been as prepared to handle being my most important life choice of all.. The  role of MOM!

So, I ask.. Do you have any “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda” thoughts of your own?  Feel free to share…

Remember when…?

play4

image from BBC

Remember when …..?

You could walk to school with friends and no parents even if it was a mile door to door…

You were able to play all day outside and would only come home for meals and when the street lights were illuminated…

You could be unsupervised on at a playground while jumping off of swings or playing dodge ball…

You could trick or treat at Halloween with only the kids in the neighborhood and sneak candy on the way home…

You knew the people on your street and several streets over. And, they knew you…

Doors on homes, cars and schools were left unlocked during the day and at time, even at night…

Schools were safe.  Malls were safe. Sporting events were safe. And they were all fun and carefree…

If you were scared or worried about “evil” it was because you watched a scary Hitchcock movie or saw the Wizard of OZ and became terrified at the flying monkeys...???

Remember when…

You didn’t mark time by the numerous acts of terrorism or natural disasters since the 1980′s…

Recalling with others .. “This was the year of … Oklahoma City bombing,  9/11, Sandy Hook massacre,  Hurricane Andrew, Katrina or Sandy….”

And, now we mark time by saying…

Remember when before the 2013 Boston Marathon you could run a race and the only “explosion” heard was the thunderous clapping of people as you crossed the finishing line…???

I hope the current generation and future generations of children will embrace the good in this world and won’t mark their lives by a series of tragic “REMEMBER WHEN’S?”…

Everything a New Teacher Should Know.. and I will ASK about! My interview with Otis Kriegel

CoveredInGlue-3D

Once again I hit the airwaves this Sunday, April 14th in order to delve in to a topic that is of great interest to me.. Helping classroom teachers.

WHY?

Well for starters, statistics are staggering over the number of teachers who are leaving their profession.  Many of the reasons cited have nothing to do with salary but the demands that are placed on teachers which in a short amount of time take an emotional and physical toll.

Years ago teachers had really a handful of simple professional duties. Instruct. Keep the parents as to progress at report card and conference time. Make sure the students get to lunch and to and from the bus on time. Don’t mess up on the fire drill routine.

Today the average classroom teacher is expected to complete all of the above and  a myriad of other duties which include being a surrogate parent, law enforcer, special education expert, local implementer oft disaster and emergency plans, counselor, behavioral specialist, etc.

All of this is why I am delighted that Otis Kriegel who wrote the book  Everything a New Elementary School Teacher REALLY Needs to Know (But Didn’t Learn in College) will be joining me for this interview.  In essence he will share his “pearls of wisdom” for new and seasoned teachers.  I hope his incredible knowledge and candor will help keep teachers in the classroom and motivate others to become teachers. See the featured video below to get a taste of Otis’ ability to relate and engage.

I loved the book – it truly is great and I am sure we will discuss the why and how of writing it.

To listen live please join us Sunday, April 14th at 8pET, 5p PT at the 411 VOICES RADIO NETWORK.

Click here to listen or access downloads

New teachers with questions are encouraged to call in during the live show.

Learn more about Otis Kriegel on his website www.otiskriegel.com

The book is available from the publisher  FREE SPIRIT PUBLISHING   and other locations where books are commonly sold.

No payment was received for this interview or review from the author or publisher. Only a copy of the book.

BEST OF….

Happy Spring everyone!  I have been receiving a lot of requests for some of my previous blogs to be “re-blogged” on different sites.  I thought that I would take an opportunity to THANK all of the people who have stopped by to read my musings, share with others and leave positive and constructive comments.

In case you are curious.. here are the “the ten most requested blogs/ topics” from the past three years when I started routinely blogging.  They are not listed in any certain order AFTER Map Skills which by far won the “race”.  Also, this list is fluid.. in a few weeks it all can change

#1- MAP SKILLS   I guess my frustration over people not having “common sense” and the use of a google image (gave credit) helped bring this one to the top of the list.

#2 Wisdom from Christopher Robin  for Parents of College Freshman    This blog has been requested time and time again.  It is not my favorite personal blog but  reflects the power of SEO (Site Engine Optimization) as  Winnie the Pooh still has a strong fan base and people searching “Christopher Robin” stumble upon my blog!  I’ll take it!

christopher-1

#3  Are YOU on a trip to Holland?  Of all the blogs I have ever posted this is by far the most personal one regarding my son and his premature birth.  My most requested blog which resonates with parents who also have unexpected challenges with the birth of their child.

#4 Hello, now GO AWAY!   I decided that I couldn’t keep silent about my cancer of the thyroid.  I wanted to be in an empowered role and educate others.  I wrote a series of articles regarding my thyroid cancer, my experience with the surgery, post surgery and even hanging out with Top Doc and Junior Docs at Hopkins Hospital.  For the most part I tried to keep it “light”..  This was the first one and again, most requested. To read the related blogs click here: CANCER

#5 Resources for Families with Autistic Children - I am happy to offer this information on a frequent basis if it helps one child or family.  I often blog for other sites on the topic of special needs and Autism.

#6 Raising a Confident teen/tween model How to get started in the “biz” .. the good, bad and ugly.  There are several articles I have written about raising a child who is a professional actor/model/ filmmaker.

#7 BULLY by Patricia Polacco (and other information about Anti-Bullying)    Sadly the topic of bullying is often searched.. thus the number of visitors to this article.

#8 Articles on Disaster Preparedness   ( I  have written numerous blogs on this topic.  Especially concerning the welfare and safety of children and adults with special needs.)  Here is the general link to all DISASTER PREPAREDNESS articles on this blog

#9 Sign Language  Apparently when you write about deafness, deaf children and sign language you drum up a boatload of readers!  So here again is the general link to all the blogs referencing sign language and topics related to deafness. SIGN LANGUAGE

camp

#10  Guest bloggers..

This last spot is dedicated to guest bloggers.  Jennifer Heicklen’s wrote a very passionate blog about the risks First Responders take when people do not heed warnings about mandatory evacuations.  Her article on the heels of Hurricane Sandy struck a chord with many and resulted in her receiving national press.  (The article was first written as a letter to the editor for  a Philadelphia based publication)

Read Jennifer Martelle Heicklin’s article here

Zaneta Barton also wrote a blog about her experiences with raising deaf children.  This article resonated the feelings of many parents.  Read Zaneta’s blog

Read these and other guest blogs (including by Kidlutions owner, Wendy Young  here  GUEST BLOGS)

###

Again, thank you for reading my blog and please let me know if you have recommendations for topics, want to be a guest blogger and/or have a favorite article that was covered on this blog.

Have a groovy day!

~Louise
